Etymology
Variant and doublet of mực (“ink”), a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 墨 (“ink”; SV: mặc). Ink lines (dây mực) are traditionally used in Vietnam (as well as East Asia) as reference lines, hence the shift in meaning.
