Etymology
From Basque mart- (“blackberry; bramble”), as in martotx (“bramble”), martsuts ~ martuza (“blackberry”). Basque also gave Aragonese martuel, Spanish madroño. Similar sense development in Galician amorodo, Portuguese morango (“strawberry”), both from amora (“blackberry; bramble”).
