mala + ström, from ström (stream, streaming water) and presumably from the verb mala (to mill, to rotate like a mill stone, to swing around, to swirl). Same as Old Danish malestrøm, Danish malstrøm, German Mahlstrom, English maelstrom, originally from Dutch maalstroom.
