Etymology
mala + ström, from ström (“stream, streaming water”) and presumably from the verb mala (“to mill, to rotate like a mill stone, to swing around, to swirl”). Same as Old Danish malestrøm, Danish malstrøm, German Mahlstrom, English maelstrom, originally from Dutch maalstroom.
