mateix

Catalan

Etymology

From Old Occitan meteix, from Vulgar Latin *metipse, from Latin -met ipse by means of rebracketing. In constructions such as egomet ipse, temet ipsum, and nosmet ipsos, the suffix became perceived as being attached to ipse as ego metipse, te metipsum, and nos metipsos instead of to the preceding pronoun. Compare Occitan meteis.
