Estonian

Verb

meeldima (da-infinitive meeldida)

  1. to like
    Mulle meeldivad uued asjad.
    I like new things.
    Kas sulle meeldis see raamat?
    Did you like this book?
    Kas sa talle meeldid?
    Does he/she like you?
Mu kassidele ei meeldi vesi, aga neile meeldib õlu.

Usage notes

Translating into English as to like, this verb is used with what would be the subject in English in the allative case, and what would be the object in the nominative case. Essentially, as in many Indo-European languages, the subject and object are switched, with a more literal translation of the above example mulle meeldivad uued asjad (I like new things) being "New things are pleasing to me".
