From Late Latin *mustacea, Vulgar Latin *mustacea, feminine of *mustaceum, ultimately from Ancient Greek μύσταξ (mústax, “upper lip, mustache”). Compare Aromanian mustatsã, French moustache, Italian mostaccio, Neapolitan mustaccio, Sicilian mustazzu, Spanish mostacho.
