Etymology
From a Late Latin *mustaceus, Vulgar Latin *mustaceus, from Byzantine Greek μουστάκιον (moustákion), diminutive of (Doric) Ancient Greek μύσταξ (mústax, “upper lip”), from Proto-Indo-European *mendʰ- (“to chew”). Compare Aromanian mustatsã, French moustache, Neapolitan mustaccio, Romanian mustață, Sicilian mustazzu, Spanish mostacho.
