From Proto-Vietic *ɗeːp (glutinous (rice)), perhaps from Proto-Mon-Khmer *c( )ɗip, a metastasised form of *cɓiit ~ *cɓait ~ *cɓət ~ *cɓəət (sticky; to stick on); cognate with Muong đếp. Compare Khmer ដំណើប (dɑmnaəp, glutinous (rice)).
