põrgu

Estonian

Etymology

Cognate to Finnish perkele and Votic perkele. Possibly a derivation of pergel, ultimately from the name of the Baltic thunder god; Compare Lithuanian perkūnas and Latvian pērkons. A Germanic origin is also possible, from Proto-Germanic *burgijaną, compare Old English byrgan. The Germanic root has possibly mixed with Proto-Slavic *berťi.
