From Vulgar Latin *passāre, from Latin passum, supine of pando (“I stretch, I spread out”). Compare Italian passare, Romansh passar, Ladin passer, Venetian pasar, Istriot passà, Catalan and Occitan passar, French passer, Spanish pasar.
