Etymology
Presumably from Proto-Germanic *plehaną, but ultimate origin unknown. The OED comments "perhaps ult. borrowed from a non-Germanic language, although this would be unusual for a strong verb." Cognate with Old Frisian plega, Middle Dutch plien, pleghen (Dutch plegen (“carry out”)), Old Saxon plegan (Low German plegen), Old High German pflegan (German pflegen).
