Various theories exist. Either diminutive of pulă (dick), or from Vulgar Latin root *pūtium (compare prepuț), from Old Latin pūtos (penis), or from root *pubucea, from Latin pubes, or from Vulgar Latin putta, feminine of puttus, superlative of putus. See Spanish, Portuguese puta.

Cognate with Aromanian putsã.
