qesh

Albanian

Etymology

Unclear. Maybe from older *klêsh, from Proto-Indo-European *klek-, *kleg- (to shout). Cognate to Ancient Greek κλώσσω (klṓssō, I cluck), Old Church Slavonic клекотъ (klekotŭ, laughter, noise), Latin clangō (scream, sound), Old English hliehhan (to laugh). However it is found in Arbëreshë Albanian as kjesh. Usually Old Albanian kl- becomes q- in Albanian while it is preserved as kl- in Arbëreshë Albanian.
