redzams (def. redzamais; adv. redzami)

1. which can or should be seen; indefinite present passive participle of redzēt 

   vilciens vēl nav redzams ― the train is not yet visible (= in sight)

redzams (definite redzamais, comparative redzamāks, superlative visredzamākais, adverb redzami)

1. visible, apparent (which can be perceived by sight)

   spektra redzamā daļa ― the visible part of the spectrum

   redzamā radiācija ― visible radiation

   redzami saules stari ― visible sun rays

   saules redzamā kustība ― apparent movement of the sun

   nākt, kļūt redzamam ― to become visible

2. visible, apparent (which can be easily perceived by sight)

   viņa seja bija kā vairumam jaunu cilvēku: ne sevišķi skaista, bet arī bez redzamiem trūkumiem ― his face was like (that of) the majority of young people: not particularly beautiful, but also without obvious flaws

   cilvēka izturēšanās ir spogulis, kurā visskaidrāk redzams, kas viņš ir ― a person's behavior is a mirror in which it becomes clearly visible who he is

3. (of people) prominent, eminent, excellent (having great achievements, much success)

   redzams dzejnieks ― eminent poet

   no stāstniekiem, kas izauguši pēckara gados, E. Vilks ir pats redzamākais, pats talantīgākais ― of the story writers who grew up in the post-war years, E. Vilks is the most prominent, the most talented

4. (of actions, events) significant, considerable, remarkable, noteworthy, notable (which attracts attention, interest)

   redzami sasniegumi ― aignificant achievements

   Rīga tagad kļuvusi par vienu no redzamākajiem pasaules fotomākslas centriem ― Rīga has now become one of the most notable photography centers of the world

   zivs ir svarīgs avots pārtikas resursu palielināšanai, tās ieņem redzamu vietu mūsu zemes pārtikas bilancē ― fish is an important source for increasing our food resources, it takes considerable space in our country's food balance

5. (used adverbially, or as a particle) apparent(ly), seeming(ly), visibly; clear(ly), obvious(ly), evidently, undoubtably (which can be taken as true)

   Elmārs apjuka; redzams, viņš nebija paradis runāt ar cilvēkiem, ko uzskatīja kaut kā pārākus par sevi ― Elmārs was confused; apparently/clearly, he was not used to talking with people whom he considered to be superior to himself

   blakus mums apsēžas kombainieris... redzams, no Ukrainas: viņa valodā katrs trešais ir ukraiņu vārds ― a combine operator sat next to us... visibly, an Ukrainian: every third word in his talk was Ukrainian

   redzams, nepatīkamo saskriešanos viņš jau pārdzīvojis ― apparently, he has already been through unpleasant situations

   “es esmu savā kolhozā traktorists”, viņš piemetina, un tūlīt redzams, ka savu darbu viņš mīl ― “I am a tractor driver in my collective farm,” he added, and (it was) immediately obvious/clear that he loved his work

   “tā turēties!” stūrmanis mundri attrauca, kas kapteinim, redzams, patika: viņš tikko manāmi pasmaidīja un aizgāja

   “to hold like this!” the helmsman said, which, evidently, pleased the captain: he smiled in a barely noticeable way and went on

6. (with acīm “to the eyes”) apparent; obvious (easy to perceive, to understand)

   jā, vecā taisnība, tas acīm redzams, / aizvien top vecāka un vājāka, / un viņas dienas ir jau skaitītas ― yes, the old law, it was obvious, / was growing increasingly older and weaker, / and its days are numbered

   darījumi, kas pēc sava satūra ir pretēji likumam vai kas vērsti uz acīm redzamu kaitējumu valstij, nav spēkā ― legal acts that by their contents are contrary to the law or are intended (to do) obvious harm to the state are null and void

Like English apparent, Latvian redzams, especially in the expresion acīm redzams, has two context-dependent, almost opposite meanings: "seemingly" (= "from what can be seen", "not necessarily true") and "obviously" (= "easy to see", "true"); cf. Russian очевидный (očevídnyj).
