Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *reipa, to be connected with Proto-Germanic *raipaz (rope), in Old High German reif 'rope, cord', Middle Low German rēp (sling, rope), Old Norse reipa (to fasten with a rope), and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *roypnós.
