satakieli

Finnish

Etymology

sata (hundred) + kieli (tongue)

Noun

satakieli

  1. Any of the birds in genus Luscinia, in Finnish satakielet. Individual species are called robin, rubythroat, nightingale and bluethroat in English.
  2. The thrush nightingale (sprosser), Luscinia luscinia.
  3. A commonly, and erroneously, used name of etelänsatakieli, the common nightingale, nightingale or rufous nightingale, Luscinia megarhynchos.

Usage notes

"Nightingale" is often translated into Finnish as satakieli. This is an error, since the bird called nightingale in English is a southern species and does not normally appear in Finland. The bird called satakieli in Finland is thrush nightingale in English.
