From Proto-Germanic *skīnaną, from an Proto-Indo-European root *skai-, *ski-. Cognate with Old Frisian skīna (West Frisian skine, skyne), Old Saxon skīnan (Low German schienen), Old Dutch skīnan (Dutch schijnen), Old High German skīnan (German scheinen), Old Norse skína (Danish skinne, Swedish skina), Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌽 (skeinan). The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek σκιά (skiá), Proto-Slavic *sěnь (Russian сень (senʹ)).
