searbăd
Romanian
Alternative forms
- sarbăd, searbed
Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly a substratum connection with Albanian tharbët (“sour, acrid”) (or derived/borrowed from it), or less likely from an alteration of Latin fervidus through a hypothetical intermediate *sfearbăd with the prefix s-, from ex-. Other theories include Vulgar Latin roots *subalbidus (“whitish”), *exalbidus, from albidus, or *salvidus, from salvia.
