Derived from an old conjugated form of the verb sedere (“to sit”)[1][2](cf. the forms with -gg-, also Latin sedeō), or an archaic variant seggere[3]. Cf. also sedia. Less likely from a Vulgar Latin *sedium or *sidium[4].
