Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish [script needed] (sevda) (compare Turkish sevda (“love”)), from Arabic سَوْدَاء (sawdāʾ, “black [bile]”), translation of the Greek µέλαινα χολή, mélaina cholē from which the term melancholy is derived.
Akin to sevdàlīnka, sevdàlija, sevdàluk, sèvdi, sèvdisati.
