From Vulgar Latin *singlutius, ultimately from Latin singultus, influenced by gluttiō. Compare French sanglot, Venetian sangiuto. Compare also Portuguese soluço, Romanian sughiț, Spanish sollozo, Sicilian sugghiuzzu, from suggluttium.
