From Old Spanish, from Vulgar Latin suggluttium (attested in some glosses), ultimately from Latin singultus, influenced by gluttiō. Compare Portuguese soluço, Romanian sughiț; compare also French sanglot, Italian singhiozzo, from *singlutium. Doublet of singulto.
