From Latin soror, from Proto-Italic *swezōr, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swésōr. The now rare variant form suroră probably derives from the Latin accusative sorōrem. Compare Dalmatian saur, seraur, Old French suer, seror (modern French sœur), Italian suora, Romansh and Neapolitan sora.
