Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin root *experlavāre, from Late Latin perlavāre, present active infinitive of perlavō, from Latin lavō (I wash). Compare Aromanian spel, aspel, spilari, and also Albanian shpëlaj (to rinse)[1]. Cf. also southern Calabrese sprullavari ("water down a broth with much water") and Sicilian spirlavatu ("washed away").[2]
