From Middle English sumerlich, sumerlic, from Old English sumorlīc, sumerlīċ (“summerly”), equivalent to summer + -ly. Cognate with Dutch zomerlijk (“summerly”), German sommerlich (“summerly”), Danish sommerlig (“summerly”), Swedish sommarlik (“summerly”).
