From Proto-Germanic *swīną, from an adjectival form of Proto-Indo-European *sū- (compare Latin sūs, Ancient Greek ὗς (hûs)). Cognate with Old Saxon swin (Middle Low German swîn), Dutch zwijn, Old High German swīn (German Schwein), Old Norse svín (Swedish svin), Russian свинья (svin’já).
