Etymology
From Old French tost, from Vulgar Latin tostum, from the neuter of Latin tostus (“toasted”), later meaning "hotly, promptly" in Vulgar Latin. Cognate to Italian tosto, Catalan and Occitan tost, to Walloon toit.
