From Proto-Slavic *tъlmačь, from a Turkic language. Cognate with Slovene tolmač, Serbo-Croatian tùmāč/ту̀ма̄ч, Russian толмач (tolmač), Slovak tlmočník (“translator”). Compare German Dolmetscher.
