thanë
Albanian
Etymology
Unclear. From Proto-Indo-European *dʰonu (“fir”), with phonetic problems. Compare Ancient Greek θάμνος (thámnos, “thicket”), Hittite [script needed] (tanau, “fir”), German Tann (“woods”), Tanne (“fir”), Breton tann (“red oak”). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *tsàna, from earlier Mediterranean substrate word *ḱastnà. Compare Ancient Greek κᾰ́στᾰνᾰ (kástana, “chestnut”) and Old Armenian կասկ (kask).
