Etymology

Prefixed formation from merrë 'fear', with r-doublet for expressive reasons, from Proto-Indo-European *mor- (“feminine evil spirit”). Cognate to Germanic *maron 'nightmare'( cf. Old English mare (“nightmare, monster”)), Slavic *mora (cf.Polish zmora 'nightmare', Czech mura 'nightmare, moth'), or to Greek μέριμνα (mérimna, “thought, trouble, uneasiness”)[1]. Alternatively, from Latin timor,but from the fact that the i in Latin timor doesn't appear in tmerr,this makes the hypothesis unlikely.
