From a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia *taranica + the Galician diminutive suffix -allo; from Proto-Celtic *tarankyos (nail), from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to drill, rub). Compare Old French taranche (big iron pin) and Old Irish tairnge (iron nail).[1]
