From Latin avunculus, probably through an intermediate Vulgar Latin *unclus. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂euh₂-n-tlo, diminutive of *h₂ewh₂-n-, enlargement of *h₂ewh₂o-. Compare French oncle, Catalan oncle.
