From Vulgar Latin *vaccārius, from Latin vacca (“cow”). Compare Aromanian vãcar, Sicilian vaccaru, Friulian vacjâr, Italian vaccaio, Occitan vaquièr, Catalan vaquer, French vacher, Spanish vaquero, Portuguese vaqueiro.
