From Baltic *valias, which cognate to Old Prussian walis (drawbar). Cognate to Estonian valjad (headstall), Estonian valjastada, Ingrian valjahad, Votic vaľľaad (headstall), Karelian vaľľahad, Ludian vaľľahad, Veps vaľľastuz.[1]
