Either from viespe + -ar or from Late Latin vespārium (“wasp nest”), from Latin vespa. Compare Aromanian yispar, Italian vespaio, French guêpier, Friulian gjespâr, Catalan vesper, Occitan vespièr, Portuguese vespeiro, Spanish avispero, Sicilian visparu, Sardinian ghespàrju.
