From Proto-Slavic *velьb(l)ǫdъ, vъlьb(l)ǫdъ, from Gothic 𐌿𐌻𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌿𐍃 (ulbandus), from Latin elephantus, from Ancient Greek ἐλέφας (eléphas). Humorous meaning from reanalysis as wielki (“large, giant”) + błąd (“error, mistake”).
