From Proto-Slavic *verteno, from Proto-Indo-European *wert- (“to turn, rotate”). Cognate with Upper Sorbian wrjećeno, Polish wrzeciono, Czech vřeteno, Old Church Slavonic врѣтєно (vrěteno), and Russian веретено́ (veretenó).
