From Proto-Germanic *wargiþō, equivalent to wearg + -þu, wearh + -þu. From Proto-Germanic *wargaz > *werg, from Proto-Indo-European *werg̑ʰ- (“to choke”). Cognate with Gothis 𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌲𐌹𐌸𐌰 (wargiþa). Related also to Old Saxon warag, Old High German warc, Old Norse vargr (“outlaw, wolf”) (Swedish varg (“wolf”)). See also English warg. See: wyrgan (“to strange, to throttle”), worry and warry.
