From Middle Dutch seehont. Synchronically equivalent to zee (sea) + hond (hound, dog).

Middle Dutch seehont, is possibly an alteration of seelhont (literally seal-hound, seal-dog), from seel (seal), from Proto-Germanic *selhaz. Compare Low German Saalhund (seal).
