Types of CE for Health Professionals

Due to the large volume of requests and limited resources, we cannot accept any standard CE requests for educational activities that start before January 2, 2018. However, we are accepting Fast Track CE requests.

CDC is accredited by seven organizations to provide CE for U.S. health professionals and the global public health community. Access to credits, continuing education units (CEUs), and contact hours for all educational activities is provided at no cost.

CDC is accredited to award CE to:

Nurses

CDC is accredited as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation.

Registered nurses should request continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours. Most U.S. State Boards of Nursing accept ANCC contact hours. California and Iowa Licensed Registered nurses have special considerations.

California and Iowa Licensed Registered Nurses (RNs)

Registered nurses in California and Iowa can receive continuing education contact hours.

  • California: The California Board of Nursing will accept CDC’s ANCC contact hours for self-study courses. However, it will not accept ANCC contact hours for courses offered within the state of California. When applying for re-licensure using ANCC contact hours, write in “ANCC self-study.” You do not need a provider number.
  • Iowa: Courses that are presented through live distance-learning technologies, such as teleconferences or satellite programs, must be covered by an approved Iowa provider if they are attended at a site within Iowa (no exceptions). Online self-study courses are acceptable if they are covered by an approved Iowa provider; granted special approval; approved by the ANA (or ANCC), the NLN, the NFLPN, or NAPNES; or approved by a board of nursing in another mandatory continuing education state.
