The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accredited as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, is pleased to offer a free, Puerto Rico-based, live training course.

• Facility: Classroom appropriate to accommodate 3 hours of lectures, demonstrations, and hands on practice sessions to teach correct methods for measuring blood pressure, capillary refill, heart rate, and strength of pulse, and to conduct tourniquet test.

COURSE LOCATION:
By appointment only in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Upon completion of the course, participants must go online to complete a course evaluation, post-test and to print the course completion certificate.

HARDWARE/SOFTWARE:
Computer, Internet access to complete course evaluation and post-test using the CDC Training and Continuing Education Online System (TCEO)

MATERIALS:
None

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Registered Nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse technicians, and licensed practical/ vocational nurses.

PREREQUISITES:
Basic knowledge of human physiology, human infectious disease, basic concepts of human immunology, basic ability to interpret laboratory results, basic understanding of patient care and management (clinic or hospital-based care), epidemiologic concepts, and public health infectious disease surveillance.

FORMAT:
These seminars consist of 1.5 hours of lectures and a 1.5 hour demonstration and practice session in Spanish.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Seminars are designed to increase knowledge and develop competency in the management of patients suspected of infection with the dengue virus.

OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe the case definition and clinical course for dengue and severe dengue.
2. Describe warning signs for dengue and importance of defervescence.
3. Explain the importance of monitoring patient vital signs and fluid balance.
4. Explain how to make a laboratory diagnosis of dengue and how to report suspected cases to the Puerto Rico Department of Health (PRDH).
5. Demonstrate correct methodology to measure blood pressure, capillary refill, heart rate, strength of pulse, and to conduct a tourniquet test.

ACCREDITATION STATEMENTS:
CNE: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This activity provides 3.0 contact hours.

CEU: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is authorized by IACET to offer 0.3 CEU’s for this program.
