CDC Science Clips: Volume 8, Issue 28, July 11, 2016
Each Tuesday, to enhance awareness of emerging scientific knowledge, selected science clips will be posted here for the public health community. The focus is applied public health research and prevention science that has the capacity to improve health now.
This week’s Science Clips features articles selected in conjunction with CDC’s 70th anniversary and the accompanying special session of Public Health Grand Rounds "Seven Decades of Firsts with Seven CDC Directors". Included are commentaries dating from CDC’s 60th anniversary from five former CDC directors who are part of the session, along with the perspective of the late Dr. David Sencer. Additionally, James Curran, Dean of the Emory Rollins School of Public Health, takes a past and future look at HIV/AIDS, one of the most important issues that CDC has faced during its history. Several of CDC’s treasures – its workforce, the Stephen B. Thacker Public Health Library and Information Center, and the Epidemic Intelligence Service – are subjects of articles. Rounding out the list are perspectives from current CDC leaders on two contemporary challenges faced by the public health community, the West African Ebola epidemic and opioid use and abuse.
The report consists of these components:
- CDC-authored publications
- Key scientific articles in featured topic areas (this week featuring articles in conjunction with the July CDC Public Health Grand Rounds, "Seven Decades of Firsts with Seven CDC Directors")
-
Key Scientific Articles in Featured Topic Areas
Subject matter experts decide what topic to feature, and articles are selected from the last 3 to 6 months of published literature. Key topic coincides monthly with other CDC products (e.g. Vital Signs).-
