Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

Over 70 public-use data files from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) are available free from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The ICPSR , located within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, is a membership-based not-for-profit organization serving member colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad. The ICPSR holdings of NCHS studies include data, with electronic documentation, from the National Health Interview Survey, National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, National Hospital Discharge Survey, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, National Nursing Home Survey and Follow-ups, among others. These files can be viewed and/or downloaded for analysis. (Tabulation software is not provided.) More studies will become freely available as paper documentation is converted to electronic format by NCHS and ICPSR.

NCHS studies at ICPSR may be accessed by searching the archive by study title, principal investigator, keywords, or ICPSR study number. To find NCHS studies, type "National Center for Health Statistics" in the box labeled "Search Holdings", and search by Principal Investigator. The freely available studies are clearly marked as such.
