Databases and Tools

NIOSH conducts research on many aspects of safe management of chemicals in the workplace.  Many of these areas of focus have been developed into databases for ease of access to the information we have developed.  The links below are some examples of NIOSH products that provide a wide array of information for use in controlling chemical hazards.

NIOSH has developed databases and tools to provide access to information about different aspects of the safe management of chemicals in the workplace. Examples of these NIOSH databases and tools are provided below with applicable links.

NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards

A source of industrial hygiene information, including NIOSH recommendations, on several hundred chemicals and classes of chemicals found in the work environment.

NIOSHTIC-2

NIOSHTIC-2 is a searchable bibliographic database of occupational safety and health publications, documents, grant reports, and other communication products supported in whole or in part by NIOSH.

International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSC)

The International Chemical Safety Cards summarize essential health and safety information on chemicals for their use at the "shop floor" level by workers and employers.  The U.S. National version has been modified by NIOSH to include OSHA PELs, NIOSH RELs, and IDLH values.

NIOSH Personal Protective Equipment Information (PPE-Info) Database

The PPE-Info Database contains Federal regulations and consensus standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Engineering Controls Database

The NIOSH Engineering Controls Database is a repository of current NIOSH information on engineering control technology.  Many of the engineering controls in this database involve controlling chemical hazards in the workplace.

Emergency Response Safety and Health Database (ERSH-DB)

This database was developed by NIOSH for the emergency response community. The ERSH-DB contains accurate and concise information on high-priority chemical, biological and radiological agents that could be encountered by emergency response personnel.

National Library of Medicine Dermal Exposure Risk Management and Logic for Emergency Preparedness and Response eToolkit

This eTooklit was developed as a collaborative effort between NIOSH and NLM. It provides emergency preparedness responders, incident commanders, and other emergency management professionals a resource library of references and information related to dermal exposure to chemicals.
