Course Description

The purpose of this online training program is to educate nurses and their managers about the health and safety risks associated with shift work, long work hours, and related workplace fatigue issues and relay strategies in the workplace and in the nurse’s personal life to reduce these risks. Part 1 (CDC Course No. WB2408) is designed to increase knowledge about the wide range of risks linked to these work schedules and related fatigue issues and promote understanding about why these risks occur. This knowledge provides background information for Part 2 of the training program. Part 2 (CDC Course No. WB2409) is designed to increase knowledge about personal behaviors and workplace systems to reduce these risks. Content for this training program is derived from scientific literature on shift work, long work hours, sleep, and circadian rhythms.

Instructions to obtain a continuing education certificate or a certificate of completion through the CDC Training and Continuing Education Online system:

1. View course, NIOSH Training for Nurses on Shift Work and Long Work Hours, online at www.cdc.gov/niosh/work-hour-training-for-nurses
   This course is divided into 2 continuing education programs called Part 1 and Part 2.
2. After you complete each Part of the course, go to CDC Training and Continuing Education Online (https://www2a.cdc.gov/TCEOnline/).
   1. If you have not registered as a participant, click on new participant to create a user ID and password; otherwise click on participant login and login.
   2. If you have registered in this system before, please use the same login name and password. This will ensure an accurate transcript.
3. Once you have logged in/registered, click on search and keyword search for courses: for Part 1 search for WB2408; for Part 2 search for WB2409.
4. Click on the course. The course information page will come up. Scroll down to register here. Click on the type of certificate that you would like to receive: CNE, CEU, CPH, or AUDIT. Then submit. Three demographic questions will come up. Complete the questions and then submit.
5. From "Participant services," click on "evaluations and tests"
6. You will be redirected to the posttest. Answer the questions in the posttest (all answers are in the course material). To receive a continuing education certificate, you must correctly answer 70% of the questions.
7. Complete the course evaluation.
8. You will be able to immediately print your continuing education certificate or certificate of completion from your personal transcript.
9. A record of your completion will be located in the transcript and certificate section of your record.

1. Explain why shift work and long work hours can lead to health and safety risks.
2. Identify a broad range of health and safety risks that are linked to shift work and long work hours.
3. Identify individual factors that can lead to differences in a nurse’s ability to adjust to shift work and long work hours.
4. Identify workplace strategies managers can implement to reduce risks from shift work and long work hours.
5. Identify strategies nurses can implement in their personal lives to reduce risks from shift work and long work hours.
