TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames. NO contact with water and active chemicals.
Powder, carbon dioxide. Use water ONLY in flooding amounts.
EXPLOSION Closed containers may develop pressure and explode on exposure to heat or if contaminated with water or reactive chemicals.

In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Abdominal pain. Cough. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Vomiting. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Local exhaust. Breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Redness. Burning sensation. Pain.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION (Further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert in case of a large spillage! Collect leaking liquid in covered containers. Treat remaining liquid with a mixture of ammonia (4-8%), detergent (2%), and water. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. If solid collect the substance into containers. Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Recommended storage temperature 20-25°C. Separated from food and feedstuffs . See Chemical Dangers. Dry. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS TO PALE YELLOW LIQUID OR CRYSTALS , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR. TURNS PALE YELLOW ON EXPOSURE TO AIR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance may polymerize under the influence of bases, tertiary amines and acyl chlorides with fire or explosion hazard. On combustion, forms toxic vapours and gases including nitrogen oxides and isocyanates. Reacts readily with water , acids and alcohols causing pressure rise explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.005 ppm as TWA; 0.02 ppm as STEL; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); SEN (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: sensitization of respiratory tract (Sa);
Carcinogen category: 3A;
(DFG 2004).
OSHA PEL: C 0.02 ppm (0.14 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: Ca See Appendix A
NIOSH IDLH: Ca 2.5 ppm See: 584849

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance, the vapour of this substance and the aerosol is irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . Inhalation of the vapour may cause asthma-like reactions. Inhalation of the vapour may cause chemical bronchitis, pneumonitis and lung oedema. Exposure far above the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma. This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S

Technical toluene diisocyanate is a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-isomers (80:20), TDI is a common name. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact with this substance. The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient. Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
