In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE

•INHALATION Sore throat. Cough. Burning sensation. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath.
Local exhaust. Breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.
•SKIN Redness. Pain. Serious skin burns.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer immediately for medical attention.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Burns
Face shield and eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
Rinse with plenty of water (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer immediately for medical attention.
•INGESTION Sore throat. Burning sensation in the throat and chest. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer immediately for medical attention.

Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Sweep spilled substance into dry covered plastic containers. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place .

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumes including sulfur oxides. The substance is a strong acid, it reacts violently with bases and is corrosive. Attacks many metals forming flammable/explosive gas (hydrogen - see ICSC 0001).

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Medical observation is indicated.

N O T E S

The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. UN 2585 applies to p-toluenesulfonic acid with no more than 5% free sulfuric acid. UN 2583 applies to p-toluenesulfonic acid with more than 5% free sulfuric acid. Hydrated form has CAS number 6192-52-5.
