TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Extremely flammable.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water in large amounts, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Vapour/air mixtures are explosive.
Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Sore throat. Cough. Burning sensation. Shortness of breath. Laboured breathing. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated, and refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Pain. Redness. Blisters. Skin burns.
Protective gloves, protective clothing.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Pain. Redness. Severe deep burns. Loss of vision.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Abdominal cramps. Shock or collapse
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth, Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention. Wear protective gloves when inducing vomiting.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Evacuate danger area. Consult an expert. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. (Extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof. Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs. See Chemical Dangers.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
HYGROSCOPIC COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH AMMONIA ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating, producing toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen cyanide. Reacts with strong oxidants, acids, acid anhydrides, acid chlorides. Reacts violently with nitroparaffins, halogenated hydrocarbons, oxidants and many other substances. Attacks copper and its compounds, lead, zinc, tin.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 5 ppm; 12 mg/m3 (as TWA); 10 ppm; 24 mg/m3 (as STEL) (ACGIH 1995-1996).
MAK: 5 ppm 12 mg/m3
Peak limitation category: I(2) Pregnancy risk group: C
(DFG 2006).
OSHA PEL: TWA 5 ppm (12 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: See Appendix D
NIOSH IDLH: 750 ppm See: 75310

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Swallowing the liquid may cause aspiration into the lungs with the risk of chemical pneumonitis. Exposure may result in death.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms.

N O T E S

The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Card has been partly updated in October 2006. See section: Occupational Exposure Limits, Ingestion First Aid.
