TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames. NO contact with oxidants.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion on contact with oxidants.

EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Cough. Sore throat. Blue lips or finger nails. Blue skin. Confusion. Convulsions. Dizziness. Headache. Nausea. Unconsciousness.
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention. See Notes.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION (See Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention. See Notes.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Personal protection: A/P2 filter respirator for organic vapour and harmful dust. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment.
Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids, food and feedstuffs . Dry. Well closed. Store in an area without drain or sewer access. Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
HYGROSCOPIC WHITE CRYSTALS . TURNS DARK ON EXPOSURE TO AIR AND LIGHT.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on contact with acids producing toxic and corrosive fumes including aniline, nitrogen oxides , and hydrogen chloride . Reacts violently with oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: (as aniline and homologues) 2 ppm as TWA; (skin); A3 (confirmed animal carcinogen with unknown relevance to humans); BEI issued (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: (as aniline) 2 ppm, 7.7 mg/m3; H; sensitization of skin (Sh);
Peak limitation category: II(2); Carcinogen category: 4; Pregnancy risk group: C; BAT issued;
(DFG 2008).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . The substance may cause effects on the blood , resulting in the formation of methaemoglobin. Exposure at high levels may result in death. Medical observation is indicated. The effects may be delayed. See Notes.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. The substance may have effects on the blood , resulting in formation of methaemoglobin.

N O T E S

Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Also consult ICSC 0011 Aniline. Card has been partly updated in October 2004. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
