The NORA Public Safety Sector Council brings together individuals and organizations to share information, form partnerships, and promote adoption and dissemination of solutions that work. At the start of the second decade of NORA in 2006, Public Safety was a sub-sector of Services, but formed a separate council to focus on the health and safety needs of public safety workers in 2009.The Council seeks to facilitate the most important research, understand the most effective intervention strategies, and learn how to implement those strategies to achieve sustained improvements in workplace practice. The NORA Public Safety Sector Council is currently working to update the Public Safety Agenda for the third decade of NORA.
Sector Description
The Public Safety sector includes over 2.86 million employees in 2015, organized into five sub-sectors: fire service, wildland fire fighting, law enforcement, emergency medical services and corrections. These occupations fall under four specific NAICS codes and are among some of the most dangerous. On a daily basis, these workers respond to emergencies occur that threaten people’s life, well-being, property, peace, and security, and may be putting their health, safety, and even lives on the line. Public safety workers are exposed to a variety of risks and stressors, and sometimes experience serious injuries from motor vehicle incidents, workplace violence, and musculoskeletal injuries.
